The Healthcare Crisis in The US Isn't New, Explained by Mint Hill NC Chiropractor

I think when we consider the healthcare crisis in the US, it's important to remember that it isn't new! Although you may think this health care crisis is relatively new to the 21st century, it has been a long time coming. In 1988, the US Surgeon General,  Everett Koop, put out a report stating that the American diet was the major cause of death in the United States!

In his report, he stated, “Although the precise proportion attributable to diet is uncertain, these eight conditions (coronary heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, atherosclerosis, chronic lung disease, pneumonia and influenza, and chronic liver disease) accounted for nearly one of the 2.1 million total deaths in 1987. Dietary excesses or imbalances also contribute to other health-related problems such as high blood pressure, obesity, dental diseases, osteoporosis and gastrointestinal diseases. Together, these diet-related conditions inflict a substantial burden of illness on Americans.”

Disease Statistics on The Healthcare Crisis Provided by Mint Hill NC Chiropractor

In this same report, Koop listed some statistics on some of these diseases. Although the numbers in 1988 were alarming, the numbers today are staggering. For instance, coronary heart disease caused approximately 35% of all deaths in the United States or one of every 2.8 deaths in 2009.  Its projected cost was estimated at more than 304 billion dollars in 2009.

On January 1st, 2006, in the United States, there were approximately 11 million men and women alive who had a history of cancer. In 2005, total cancer deaths in the US were approximately 559,000. The cost of cancer was suggested to be 72 billion dollars per year.
